英國科學家團隊在南極洲冰原下方，發現幾乎和巴黎艾菲爾鐵塔一樣高的巨大隧道。
　
錢江晚報據英國《每日郵報》報導，來自英國多所大學以及英國南極勘測的研究人員，搭乘飛機飛越西南極洲的菲爾希納龍尼冰棚時，發現了此隧道。此隧道高820英尺(約合250公尺)，高度是213英尺的倫敦塔橋的4倍，幾乎趕上987英尺(約300公尺)的艾菲爾鐵塔。

機上雷達和衛星照片揭示，冰原表面的冰脊和洞穴顯示底部存在隧道。科學家先前認為，在冰原下流動的融水，會淺淺地大範圍流動。不過資料顯示，融水在冰原下流動，就像河流般。科學家根據隧道位置推測，很可能是冰棚下的冰塊融化後，融水在冰原下流動，經過陸地再流往海洋，最後形成隧道。
